"We gather to support
the philosophy of vegetarianism, share knowledge and socialize."
This was a quote by Max
Girouard in a Ft. Worth Star Telegram article published in February
1992. That article, "Vegetarian society forms in Fort Worth," was
about Max and Grace Girouard starting a vegetarian group in the Forth Worth
area to meet other like-minded people. FWVS is
now incorporated with non-profit [501(c)(3)] status. Our group is also
a member of the Lone Star Vegetarian Network - LSVN, an
association of vegetarian societies from communities across the state of Texas.
The Lone Star Vegetarian Network sponsors an annual Vegetarian
Chili Cook-Off in the fall in a different city each year.
In the years since we started, we have seen many changes in members and activities, but we remain committed to two principal goals - public education about vegetarianism and socializing with others interested in a vegetarian lifestyle. Information tables, sponsoring speakers, viewing and discussing videos, food sampling and cooking demonstrations are several of the things we do to inform people about eating a meat-free diet. We enjoy gathering socially at restaurants and members' homes for potluck meals, such as our annual pool party in August or our harvest dinner in the fall.
"Fort
Worth Vegetarian Society" is a statement in itself - "Yes,
Cowtown has vegetarians!"
